TUCSON, Ariz. -- The husband of former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords says he bought an assault weapon in Tucson to make a point about the ease of background checks for gun owners.

Appearing Monday on CNN, Mark Kelly says he plans to turn the AR-15 in to Tucson police.

Kelly says he went to a store recently to buy a .45 caliber handgun, which he plans to keep.

He says ``it's too easy to buy an assault weapon and it really shouldn't be.''

The AR-15 is among 157 military-style weapons that would be banned under a bill pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Kelly and Giffords have been outspoken about the need for new gun-control measures.

Giffords was among 13 people wounded in a January 2011 rampage in Tucson that left six dead.

Ok, I'm missing the point here
Do you have a criminal background, thereby making the point on how easy it is for a criminal to get one? Are you making the point that anyone with enough money can buy one? Are you making the point that it's easy for law abiding citizens to get one? Possibly the point is on how easy you can get media attention? Tune in next week when we report on Mark Kelly using the bathroom. Well call me stupid, it won't be the first time, but I am completely missing the point here.

    It ain't an assault weapon!
Assault Weapon Definition: An assault weapon is anything used as a weapon to assault someone with. Pencil, boiling water, frying pan, etc. If no one was assaulted with this firearm, then it is NOT an assault weapon. Assault is an action, not a thing. You need to pay more attention Gaby and not be so gabby about an issue that you know so little about.
Politically incorrect and proud of it.

This is going to backfire big on bonehead kelly
It proved that people without criminal records buy firearms through the system while criminals will either steal them or go the black market. A follow challenge to bonehead kelly, go buy one in a private transaction and don't be offended when the seller askes if you can legally own a gun! Stupid idiot, thanks for proving the system works.

this guy is disgraceful and a hypocrite! Stop parading your wife around for your liberal progressive agenda in destroying the second amendment. For a supposedly smart guy, he sure is acting dumb.

What did Kojak think would happen? He has a clean criminal record and is of sound mind (although I consider him to be looney!) He has every RIGHT to buy and own a gun. Its guaranteed to him by the Constitution and Bill of Rights!

    Mark Kelly showed everyone that
he is stupid. He proved nothing that we don't already know about and made up the story when he got caught.

Article is a little light on facts. Was he not required to get a background check done? Did he use an alias?

    sounds like it worked
interesting i recently bought a gun and it was a hassle. Had to answer a ton of questions on the computer and a few minutes later results came in I passed. More important is did the gun come with a lock? mine did so I will lock it up and my kids cant shoot it. Plus gun safety says you also store you ammo in a separate lock location and if afford a cheap $60 gun safe you do that too. and everyone take gun safety course
