TUCSON -- Authorities say a California man who fatally shot himself in southern Arizona had robbed a Tucson credit union hours earlier.

Tucson police on Thursday identified the man as 53-year-old Kirk Luethy, from the Los Angeles area.

Police say a man robbed the Pyramid Federal Credit Union at gunpoint Feb. 28 and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.

Later that evening, a Cochise County Sheriff's deputy on patrol in the San Simon area spotted a vehicle with Canadian plates parked off Interstate 10.

The deputy approached the vehicle and asked the driver for identification. Authorities say the man sped off and later stopped in a desert area and shot himself.

Authorities searched the vehicle and found firearms, ammunition, cash, a ski mask, binoculars, gloves, a wig and makeup.
