PHOENIX -- Southbound Interstate 17 in Phoenix has reopened Thursday morning after a fatal car-pedestrian accident.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said the body of an unidentified woman was found on the southbound freeway at 16th Street, near the split from I-10.

He said officers are speaking with the driver of a vehicle that struck the woman and that the driver, who called police, won't be arrested. The accident happened around 4 a.m.

The closure shut down the freeway until shortly before noon.
