Christopher W. Chevalier (Phoenix Police Department)

PHOENIX -- Authorities say a suspect is in custody in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Phoenix earlier this month.

Phoenix police announced at a news conference Thursday afternoon that 41-year-old Christopher W. Chevalier is being held on suspicion of manslaughter, tampering with physical evidence and leaving the scene of a fatal collision.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump said a witness saw the report and called police, ultimately leading to Chevalier's arrest.

Police say 41-year-old Anna Blaze died in a hospital on March 4.

That was a day after a red 1970s Fiat drove onto the sidewalk near Northern Avenue and 11th Street and struck Blaze as the mother of two was walking with a friend.

Police say Chevalier lives in Phoenix but they didn't immediately know if he has a lawyer yet.

KTAR's Martha Maurer contributed to this report.
