PHOENIX -- A wanted Arizona sex offender has been captured in Mexico and handed over to U.S. authorities.

The U.S. Marshal David Gonzales announced Saturday that 49-year-old Stephen Scott Barnes was taken into custody in Phoenix after a nearly 12 year search.

Authorities say Barnes was released from prison in 1997 after being convicted of and sentenced to five years in the custody of the Arizona Department of Corrections for sexual conduct with a minor. But authorities say he failed to register as a sex offender in Arizona and fled to Mexico.

Barnes was detained by police in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico last month.

It was unclear if he had an attorney.
