PHOENIX -- Businesses would not be able to give away animals as prizes under a proposed state law moving forward in the Arizona House of Representatives.

A House committee unanimously advanced a measure Wednesday that would ban live animals as prizes in contests or games and at amusement venues.

The provision would not apply to goldfish, pet stores or agricultural operations.

Republican Rep. John Kavanagh is behind the measure. He says his wife suggested the law after she learned about a local fair that gave out live animals.
