PHOENIX -- The Phoenix City Council has approved a proposal to expand the city's anti-discrimination law to include protections for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people in city contracts, housing, employment and public accommodations such as restaurants.

The city currently prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, genetic information and marital status.

More than 50 people spoke about the issue at a council hearing that lasted more than four hours and stretched from Tuesday afternoon into the night.

Mayor Greg Stanton says the changes would help Phoenix compete with more than 160 U.S. cities that already have enacted similar provisions.

The proposal drew opposition from social conservatives and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. The diocese contends the proposal is too broadly worded and could trample on religious liberties.

Councilman Sal DiCiccio said the vote should've been postponed ``until it gets a proper vetting.''

they begin to think they're more "special" than everybody else and deserves special treatments. When businesses and govt have to go way out of their ways just to accomodate these "special" groups and interfering with the 95% of us then it bothers me. I can't stand them we they have to wear their bright uniforms or scream loudly to proclaim themselves ... because us straight folks don't do that.

    Greatest Irony
I agree with the comments about how we should not create protected classes. While they say it is to prevent discrimination, it in fact does just the opposite. Now anybody who may not serve/hire/whatever because of a certain reason, will now face the possibility of being sued for no other reason than the person is Gay and didn't get what they wanted. You better believe hiring and other services are going to see drastic cuts in order for employers/owners to cover their legal backsides. In short, it is disgusting that in the land of equality, some people are now more equal than others.
