PHOENIX -- House lawmakers are reviewing the legality of solitary confinement rooms for school children.

A bill advancing in the House would generally require school boards to seek prior consent from parents before subjecting children to confinement rooms.

But principals and teachers wouldn't need consent if they determine the student poses imminent physical harm to themselves or others.

Last year, two parents sued the Deer Valley Unified School District for an unspecific amount after their son was placed in what school officials called a "cool-down room."

Using seclusion rooms is legal in Arizona, and each school district has its own policies.

This just lends more credence to the theory that our children are now being detained and not educated.

    Sometimes
it's necessary to "detain" 1 disruptive student so that you can "educate" the rest of the students.

    it pays
it pays to not raise a child right. Teach them how to cause problems then when something happens sue for millions. Great example is a classmate was a drugie in school and adult life, arrested multiple times but while high on drugs was resisting while at the county jail, took 8 to hold him down later died. Parents got millions. by the way he was over 40 yrs old

Generally, I agree with you, but my daughter went to the school in question. The kids know that this room exists but the school does not inform the parents. And the kid that was detained was in there for almost a full day, not just a few minutes. Not allowed out for lunch or restroom breaks - that’s a lot even for a kid who deserves to be taken out of the room. There has to be better guidelines around how such cool down rooms (or solitary confinement) can and should be used.

When I was growing up we
didn't have cool down rooms, we got sent to the principals office. We also had 2 recess breaks to run around and release energy along with gym class. So what's the difference today from then? Instead of these cool down rooms, maybe we should be looking at the real issue, how lazy have educators become?

    not educators...
but parents and society in general. We pay teachers squat, they get little to no parental support, we fund schools like crap and we expect miracles? You get out what you put in. We spend the 2nd fewest dollars on education in the country and are ranked close to last on education. SURPRISE there's a correlation. I am for bringing back "the board of education" so long as it's ok'd by the parents. (swating).
