BENSON -- A 9-year-old boy who was hunting with his grandfather was shot when a gun accidentally went off as he was climbing over a fence.

The Cochise County Sheriff's Office says the boy was struck in the leg early Sunday northeast of Benson.

His injury wasn't life-threatening, but he suffered significant damage to one of his legs.

The sheriff's office says the accident occurred as the grandfather had the boy hand him a rifle by sliding it under the fence once the grandfather was on the other side.

The boy was airlifted to University Medical Center in Tucson where he was undergoing treatment.
