NOGALES, Ariz. — U.S. and Mexican officials have shut down a cross-border smuggling tunnel in Nogales, Ariz.

The tunnel was discovered Friday in Mexico just as a person was digging what authorities believe was to be another well-engineered tunnel for smugglers.

Authorities say the tunnel was being dug west of the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry and had extended five feet into the U.S. but had not yet opened up.

Immigration and Custom Enforcement officials say authorities last week shut down a just-completed tunnel close to the Morley Pedestrian Gate, also in Nogales, and seized more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana. That hand-dug tunnel was about 68 feet long and 2 feet wide.
