McCain speaks at a town hall event in Phoenix. (Jim Cross/KTAR)

PHOENIX -- Sen. John McCain held a town hall Wednesday in Phoenix that focused almost entirely on gun control in America.

A crowd of about 150 appeared to be evenly divided by gun supporters and opponents. McCain told the crowd that Congress will not pass an assault weapons ban. Karen Teves, whose son Alex was killed in the Aurora, Colo. movie theater shooting, said she was not pleased with McCain's assertion that an assault weapons ban is out of the question.

"What he doesn't realize that 81 percent of Americans, 71 percent of gun owners and 60 percent of NRA members support renewing the assault weapons ban," she said.

McCain did not say if he supports or opposes universal background checks for all gun buyers which many believe will close the so-called gun show loophole.

"Obviously we have two goals: Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill," he said. "We need to take measures to achieve that."

That assault weapons ban was signed into law by former President Bill Clinton in 1994 and expired in 2004.

At a Sun Lakes town hall Tuesday, McCain was http://ktar.com/?sid=1611668&nid=29" >grilled about immigration reform. It was a much calmer town hall on Wednesday.

    Interesting
how KTAR writers quote one person in the crowd with one view and quite possibly the least informed one at that.

So, you are saying that John McCain is too stupid to know this? Yet, YOU know it. Regardless, it is all bull since the numbers are false anyway. 81% of Americans do NOT support renewing an assault weapons ban. You can't point out a survey of more than a thousand people that comes to the same conclusion so drop the bs already.

Not something that infringes on the 2nd amendment. But you wouldn't know about those.

Don't go around trying to convert us of nothing McCain. 3-D printers can make you a gun. I'm more worried about who is in office. When the government wants to put out a questionnaire for our military personnel asking if they would fire upon U.S. citizens. You all better wise up that this economy is being taken to the brink of a Socialist Society. Why you sleep. The person in office gave himself and family secrete service for life. When Bush retracted that years ago giving himself only 10 years and every president forward.

Google "pig slaughter" due to farmers not being able to feed their pigs and other aminals being put down. As our meat cost skyrocket. The largest tomato farmer in the world in California was put in jail by our government for what? Due to him being an alcoholic and selling some moldy tomatoes. The government wanted this farmers hydropontic farming business to change hands.

Your guess is as good as mind... into who's hands the tomatoe farmer's business will go. This government is now stealing farms out from under people. For what the new "POT" industry to sale to the rest of the world. To brainwash the minds of our youth and to take down this nation. The new world order is taking place as America will be brought to its knees. Real food cost are already hyper-inflated and the junk food you can buy for less to fill your bellies. Look at the statehood of Puerto Rico's commonwealth quitely becoming our 51st State perhaps with Obama.
