PHOENIX -- Authorities say a 13-year-old student at a Phoenix-area middle school has been taken to a hospital after coming to school drunk.

Phoenix Fire Department crews responded to Kyrene Akimel A-al Middle School in Ahwatukee after a staff member suspected the boy might be intoxicated.

ABC15 News reports principal Mike Deignan sent a letter home to parents explaining that the school called for assistance after a school nurse "noticed a student who appeared to be in need of attention."

Paramedics took the boy to Chandler Regional Hospital.

School officials say the boy's family was notified and was on campus before authorities arrived.

Kyrene School District spokeswoman Nancy Dudenhoefer says the boy is back home with his parents.

There was no immediate word on any possible punishment he might face.

Lately, anything that remotely involves a gun or a crazed school kid . . . no matter how benign . . . . gets headline news. It fuels the agenda.
