Arizona Senate approves changes to ballot process

PHOENIX — Arizona lawmakers want to make it harder for citizens to put issues on the ballot.
A bill approved by the Senate in a 29-1 vote Monday would require political committees to submit a statement of organization before collecting signatures to support their ballot item.
The Senate also approved a proposal that would ask voters to move up the deadline for groups to submit petition signatures. That would give courts and elected officials more time to review the measures and leave political committees with less time to collect signatures. The 18-12 vote drew opposition from Democrats.
Both bills must be approved by the House to move forward.
