PHOENIX -- An Arizona House panel has passed a bill banning cities and counties from destroying guns turned in at buy-back programs.

The programs were designed to give people a safe place to get rid of unwanted weapons.

The bill passed committee Wednesday despite opposition from Democrats and testimony from Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox. She said people who turn guns in at the events want them destroyed so they can't be used to hurt someone.

Public Safety committee chairman Justin Pierce said he's been getting thousands of emails from constituents who want the practice banned.

The Mesa Republican argued the government shouldn't be destroying public property.

A bill requiring sales of seized weapons was enacted last year, but cities including Tucson have argued it doesn't apply to buy-back programs.

    How many people really
believe that the guns turned in during buy-backs are really worth anything? Sure, I bought the Glock for $600 and I'd love to give it to you for $50 in groceries. Yeah, right. Detroy them, they're not worth anything anyway. It's a gun "buy" back, seems to me once the gun is bought back by the State, County or City, it's no longer "public property". Not destroying them and reselling them is kind of counter productive isn't it?

    Firearms have no soul.
Firearms are things. They did nothing wrong. There is NO guilt felt by them. The sale of confiscated firearms benefits us all. The money garnered from their sale is used by police departments to buy equipment that they need. No extra expense to the taxpayers. All federal firearms laws are followed in their sale. Nothing underhanded. If you feel so strongly about this issue buy them them then destroy them.
Politically incorrect and proud of it.

    Conservative vs Liberal
If a conservative doesn't want a gun, they don't buy one. If a liberal doesn't like guns, they don't want anyone to have them.

A semi-automatic handgun and several high capacity magazines took over the free will of a young man in Chicago today forcing him to load and fire the firearm into a crowd of people. The gun and magazines then escaped and are on the loose. The young man thanks God the gun did not turn on him, fleeing when authorities began arriving. The gun and magazines are described as black and menacing looking. More details as they become available.
