A 16-year-old Youngtown boy was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of bringing a loaded gun to school and making threats.

The student is suspected of having the gun on both a school bus and the Dysart High School campus.

Deputies learned of the suspect after performing a wellness check on a 14-year-old student, who was absent from school. That boy's mother told police her son was threatened by the 16-year-old at a bus stop.

The suspect was contacted by deputies and found to have a loaded .25-caliber pistol in his possession.

The suspect was arrested on four felony charges.

    safety of guns
responsible gun owner would have the firearm with a trigger lock and ammo stored in a fireproof document/money safe. if the gun owner had enough money he would also have a gun safe. This means the kid would not have been able to load the gun and been unable to bring it to school. Maybe our gun laws should be more about safety of guns not who buys them.

    Responsible gun owners...
know better than to have a trigger lock and store the ammo in a safe, because when there is a threat you usually have less than 5 seconds to react to it. Yes keep the gun in a safe place where kids cannot get to it, and if you are really cautious keep the gun unloaded. But when somebody is at the door trying to break it down, you don't have time to go getting your ammo from the other side of the house and to take the trigger lock off. Time is crucial, and seconds can make a critical difference.

    Gun Free Zones?
Although having students armed at a K-12 school is NOT something I would recommend, I think this article goes to show that the idea of a gun free zone is an illusion. That is why at least at a college level gun free zones should be done away with entirely, because you never know if somebody has a gun until it is too late. And the best way to defend against gun violence is to be equally armed.

    Just throw it
An unloaded, locked gun is as good as a rock when you need it. This is just bad parenting. By the time you are 16 you should have a healthy respect for weapons.

    Smart Parent?
The boy's mother told police her son was threatened by the 16-year-old at a bus stop, but she did not notify anyone? I do not know the details of course, but it seems amazing that someone could be so selfish and not do anything to ensure the safety of other parents children.

while i agree with responsible gun owners
fact of the matter is not all gun owner are responsible and there in rests the problem. Guns in safe's with locks are not being used by teens. Clearly this is a desperate move by a kid being bullied. Which again brings about the topic of bullying. Yet some here will say that's a "liberal" issue. When your kid's classmate who is being bullied starts shooting kids chances are political affiliation will mean nothing. This is an ALL OF US problem, and YES it is a problem.

    gilbert,
from the article it looks like the kid with the gun was the bully, and the other kid that stayed home was the one being threatened and/or bullied. Bullies are created at home by the parents, not political parties. Parents are far too busy these days to be involved with the development of their child, in their opinion, that's what the schools are for. Most parents also seem to be afraid to discipline their child as well when they do step out of line. You know, it's just not PC to discipline a child anymore. Yeah, right.

    Great job,
Sheriff Joe! Where were the "parents"? These idiots must be held accountable for this young thug's actions, and, be tossed into juvenile hall until he's 21!

    Schools are too busy
suspending kids who are using their fingers as guns, or a piece of paper that has a gun drawn on it, then to mess with bullying teens. I am sure this parent called the school to report it but the school response was proably it's at a bus stop on not on school property therfore it's not a school problem. So this kid felt he had no choice and was preparing to defend himself.

    Great job by the
deputies to follow up on this report they recieved. Had they not followed up this story might have ad a tragic ending with a bully shot dead and a another teen with his life ruined which still might happen with 4 felonies against him.
