WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican Sen. John McCain's tweet comparing Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to a monkey is drawing criticism from a fellow GOP lawmaker as racist.

On Monday, McCain wrote,

Faced with criticism, McCain said in another tweet,

That didn't satisfy Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, who tweeted,

During the 2008 presidential campaign, McCain created a stir during a South Carolina appearance when he repeated "Bomb Iran," to the tune of the Beach Boys song "Barbara Ann."

that comment was racist at all. That card is getting real old, so is blaming liberals for everything too. that one is getting just as old. I'm a liberal, and I think people ought to lighten up a it and quit being so afraid of getting crucified for saying the slightest thing.

I think Senator McCain can tweet anything he wants to tweet. This Iranian dictator is a moron and people need to wise up about him.

Wrote and performed Bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran in 1980, it was a HUGE hit due to the Hostage Crisis (all of whom had JUST been released after more than 14 months in captivity). My father introduced this song to the then PRIVATE citizen, John McCain--who after spending YEARS himself as a POW (I.e. HOSTAGE) could actually understand the humor in its absurdity. Folks, y'all really DO need to lighten up, Senator McCain is a true PATRIOT, who does in fact have the same right to free speech as you and I.

I think the joke was funny as all hell, especially if I'm sitting around with my drinking buddies...I mean that's something I would say, and definitely something I would laugh at! BUT, John McCain is a public official and should apply a filter to what he says in public. Yes, as a Senator, you shouldn't say whatever you fancy. It looks bad and makes you look unprofessional. Now around your drinking buddies...that's another story!
