TUCSON -- The Pima Community College chancellor search has been put on hold after a government audit in another state raised questions about the past job performance of one of the finalists.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that former Desert Community College District president Maria Sheehan withdrew her name Friday as a finalist after the newspaper contacted her about the California audit.

The audit found that Sheehan was president of the California college when unnamed top officials there knowingly inflated the school's enrollment figures, bringing in millions more in state aid to the college.

California officials say matter has been referred to the Riverside County district attorney in California for "possible prosecution."

Sheehan, who now is president of Truckee Meadows Community College in Nevada, called the audit's conclusions "horrifying."
