Red Cross helps Arizona tribes with water shortage

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The American Red Cross is helping with water deliveries to northern Arizona tribes where subfreezing temperatures have resulted in broken waterlines and water shortages.

On the Navajo Nation, as many as 2,000 homeowners in the Window Rock area have been affected by waterline breaks. Residents in Chinle, Dilkon, Kayenta and Pinedale are also dealing with outages and low pressure.

Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly declared a state of emergency on Friday.

The Red Cross' Grand Canyon Chapter says it's working with tribal, county and state authorities to get water distributed to Navajo and Hopi communities.

Deliveries were made Wednesday to the village that is home to the Hopi tribe's government. More water will be delivered to the Navajo capital of Window Rock on Thursday and Friday.
