A lot of people will be walking Valley streets on Wednesday, taking a different kind of census.

"For the first time in a couple of years, the entire region will be engaging in a count of our homeless population," said Jody Liggett, the Homeless Policy Advisor for Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton. "We have teams headed up by the Maricopa Association of Governments, along with city personnel, non-profit associations and hundreds of volunteers. They will fan out over an assigned territory looking for individuals who are out on the street."

Stanton will be on one of the teams walking the city. Starting at 8 a.m., he will be working in the area north of Van Buren Street between Central Ave. and Seventh Ave. The teams will not only count the homeless, but will talk with them about their problems.

Liggett said that the homeless come from all walks of life.

"We've got homeless people who are veterans," she said. "We've got single mothers with children who have fallen through the cracks. There are people who are former professionals that have had a disabling health condition that just wiped them out financially, and they find themselves out on the streets."

The census is called the MAG Point In Time Street Count and Survey of homeless families and individuals. Liggett said the census could help Maricopa County and cities to get federal funding to provide services for the Valley's homeless population.

How to Conquer a Nation For Dummies
First, you enter a weakened economy and become its leader. Then you allow its borders to erode while burdening businesses and citizens with restrictions and taxes. Further, create mayhem and discord with activist groups and false press. All the while, abuse power by eroding the Constitution with executive orders, etc. Meanwhile create unheard-of debt to set up a safety net for poverty-level entitlements for the masses as they increasingly fall and become subservient. Voila. Defeat.

Ignore the homeless, the poor, widows and orphans. Continue the bailouts of big banks, finance companies, etc. Resist any tax increases on the wealthy no matter how small. Continue to spend, spend, spend on the mega military and wars in third world countries on the other side of the globe. Only cut spending on the needy. Continue the widening gap between the poor and rich. How long will our country last?

    Sorry Rassam
A lot of people on this site like to jump on the bandwagon and point fingers at the current administration rather than actually educating themselves and looking closer at the issues.

    Sorry mellowyellow
but if you want to point out people blaming others, take a look at our current administration. Our President is a prime example of point fingers at everyone else but himself. It's Bush's fault, it's Republicans fault, It's fox tv's fault. You lead by example and this is what you get. Good leader we have.

I don't disagree with you one bit, I just think these individuals like to finger point and name call rather than taking a closer look at the issues and coming up with logical solutions. Instead they spew hate, racism and clearly expose their ignorance. I don't support the current administration but they aren't any worse or better than the previous one either. Maybe it's time to end the serious divide in this country and begin looking at issues and coming up with solutions.

    So many point fingers
including myself. It's easy to get caught up in the finger pointing when you have some idiots pointing the finger and you point back. Unfortunately this divide isn't going to end any time soon for our country. Our leaders (all of them) love this fluff and distractions, continue to divide us so they can get away with more. So how do you stop the divide that is going on? How do you get both sides of the media to be back in the center again and stop trying to divide us? How do you get politicians to when they speak not to always blame someone else for eveything in the new big story of the week?

claim to have all of the or even any of the answers. I think you are right though, it does go both ways, I'm not innocent myself and I do think that the media is to blame for quite a bit, It's also not going to go away BUT what if just one person says STOP? What if just one person says, I want to hear your solution and maybe I'll try it. What if just one person says enough is enough with the hatred and blame, and start trying to do something. Call me an idealist - It seems to be my theme for the day - Quit hatin'
