FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Authorities are cautioning skiers and others in the backcountry of the San Francisco Peaks north of Flagstaff to be on the alert for potential avalanches.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office said there's been significant new snow on top of the existing snow base and winds expected to kick up Tuesday could increase the danger of avalanches.

The office said that no avalanche control is conducted outside of the Arizona Snowbowl ski area.

Out-of-bounds skiers and others using the backcountry are advised to carry avalanche rescue gear such as a beacon, probe, shovel and winter survival gear.
