KINGMAN, Ariz. -- A 7-year-old Phoenix girl was killed in a hit-and-run crash near the Arizona-Nevada border on Wednesday and authorities said they were questioning a vendor for the National Park Service in the case.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials did not immediately identify the vendor as a suspect or make an arrest. They said he is assigned to work on the Nevada side of the Lake Mead Recreational Area for the Park Service.

The girl was struck on a switchback road north of U.S. 93 about 7 miles from the Hoover Dam's recreational area about 10:30 a.m. after she ran onto the road, DPS spokesman Bart Graves said. Her name has not been released.

Graves said the girl and her family were on their way to Idaho, and the family had stopped its car on the side of the road- likely for sightseeing purposes. The girl ran onto the road for an unknown reason after opening a passenger-side door, according to Graves.

Witnesses said she was struck by a silver SUV, which then sped off.

Several park rangers were in the area when the crash occurred and tried to resuscitate the girl, who suffered severe head trauma. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Graves said.

The SUV was later found in the Lake Mead area, according to Graves.

U.S. 93 is one of the main routes between northwestern Arizona and the Hoover Dam. The crash resulted in a long detour for travelers headed to Las Vegas.
