A helicopter pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in a Mesa neighborhood on Tuesday, fire officials said.

The homemade helicopter made the hard landing about 2 p.m. near Stapley and University. There was not an explosion and fire hazards were not present.

"He has experience in building these type of helicopters," said Mesa Fire Cpt. Forrest Smith. "We don't know what happened. Obviously, the FAA will be doing that investigation."

The male pilot, who is in his 60s, exited the craft before officials arrived.

The pilot said he was flying to Falcon Field from Chandler when he had mechanical issues.
