A serious collision closed Interstate 17 in Phoenix on Tuesday, the Arizona Department of Transportation said in a release.

A woman was changing a tire in the HOV lane when she was struck by a pick-up truck.

"The driver of the truck that hit that vehicle and another occupant fled on foot into the city streets and a short time later, a male and a female were take into custody," said Carrick Cook with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The freeway was closed at the Loop 101 and traffic was being diverted to Pinnacle Peak.

There was no timetable for the freeway to be reopened.

The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries.
