Audit reports improved finances for Yuma County city

SAN LUIS, Ariz. -- Auditors said San Luis' finances are improving with higher rates charged residents of the Yuma County city for trash collection and water and sewer services.
A certified public accounting firm's audit said San Luis may have to again dip into its general fund to cover the costs of municipal services.
But the Sun newspaper of Yuma reported that the audit indicated the deficit in the city's enterprise fund in the current fiscal year is just under $400,000. That's down from $1.5 million two years ago.
San Luis began increasing water, sewer and trash collection rates in 2010 to help make those services pay for themselves.
Mayor Gerardo Sanchez said city officials will work to find additional ways to eliminate the shortfall by fiscal year's end.
