Surprise police say armed man they shot was suicidal
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Authorities said a man who was fatally shot by Surprise police was believed to be suicidal and had threatened officers.
Surprise police said Monday that the shooting of Joel Byne, 52, remains under investigation.
They said Byne was threatening his own life with a gun Saturday, held a rifle to his head and told police he was going to get them to shoot him.
Police said they tried to negotiate with Byne and used a less lethal round on him. Byne, in turn, pointed the rifle at officers.
After police shot Byne, he was transported to a hospital and died shortly after arrival.
