PAGE, Ariz. -- A small earthquake has struck a remote area along the Arizona-Utah border.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 3.1 earthquake hit about 8:30 a.m. Monday. It was centered 22 miles from Page and 82 miles east of Hurricane, Utah.

USGS spokeswoman Leslie Gordon said the quake's intensity was small enough that only people who were fairly close to the epicenter would have felt it.

The USGS said the Colorado Plateau is an area of low seismic activity and any earthquakes that have struck there typically have been small.
