CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Just days after a promotion was launched involving Deal Chicken and Desert Valley Firearms, the online coupon site has pulled the plug.

Desert Valley Firearms offered a $39 handgun safety training course that was big step toward getting a concealed handgun permit through the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Owner Dale Roddy said he received calls and emails from Deal Chicken on Tuesday informing him the deal was off.

"They told me basically the culture is changing."

Living Social cancelled the same deal on Dec. 14, the day of the Connecticut school shooting.

Roddy believes that simply means Deal Chicken and Living Social feared backlash after the Sandy Hook school shooting and the increasing talk of tighter gun control, including a possible ban on assault weapons and extended ammunition clips.

"I'm just trying to teach people responsible use of handguns," he said. "That's what we're preaching, nothing more. How to follow the laws. Learn what works and doesn't work."

Roddy said firearms dealers have been unfairly attacked since the school shootings and some callers opposed to guns have been filled with venom.

"One lady calling from Connecticut called me a merchant of death," he said. "Anybody who knows me knows that I am not. It takes a toll emotionally and I understand what the families in Connecticut feel like. I lost two family members to gunfire. The reality is that the anti-gun movement puts a panic into the public and they want more guns, bullets, everything. It achieves the opposite of what they're trying to do."

Roddy said he will take a loss, but he will keep offering the $39 course which usually carries a price tag of $100 without Deal Chicken and Living Social "until the end of time if it helps train people how to be safe with handguns."

    Concealed weapons Permit
Roddy, keep up the good work. I got my concealed weapons permit 8 years ago. The instructor was a trainer for the local police & sheriffs departments. I learned a tremendous amount of information. We were taught how to handle ourselves in situations, and encouraged not to draw if we don't have to. I never leave home without my gun, and even more so now. It is unfortunate that people feel the way they do, but I have never seen a gun shoot someone by itself. Thanks to your committment to gun safety and defense.

    Thanks.....
Working Man....Thanks for the kind words. A special thank you to KTAR, and and especially Jim Cross for covering this issue. He originally came to the store to interview us about what a great "deal" this was. It really bothered me that I had to call him and tell him not to run with the originally story, because the deal got pulled. He took the lead on this, and told the "rest of the story". We are a small business trying to do right for our community.

    Sad commentary
that we now have to be careful who or what we support for fear of "backlash". Working Man makes a good point about the CCW class encouraging not to draw. Took a CCW class three weeks ago and throughout the class the recurring theme was to find a non-lethal solution or way out of the particular situation.

So let me understand the logic . . .
Deal Chicken apparently no longer supports gun safety education because of a recent shooting? Thats as smart as doing away with driver safety classes because of a crash. Taking that mentality a step further, I think I’ll do away with chicken because of a recent salmonella outbreak.

    Let's Protest Lowes/Home Depot !
Thinking about getting a handgun since it'll be safer than a hammer or club for society according to recent FBI report. I think those sheeps out there (since they don't think but just follow the media's agenda) should protest at Lowes/Home Depot and have all the construction workers/handymans register their hammers/clubs. Please realized that those govt who's pushing gun control/ban are themselves surrounded by armed security. If we take all the guns away, only two groups will have guns ... the govt and the criminals (are they the same ?).

    So Deal Chicken
and Living Social don't support responsible gun ownership, Deal Chicken and Living Social don't support the second amendment. Good to know who I won't do business with anymore.

    more "progressive logic" (oxymoron)
The progtards are in a full court press to take away the 2nd amendment because an unarmed society cannot resist the repeal of the 18th amendment. Once the 2nd amendment is gone all the others can fall like dominos.
