Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton says he supports tighter gun restrictions and following the mass shootings in Colorado and Connecticut he believes Americans are ready for a change.

"We're not naive, we know it will take a lot more," he said Monday. "But it's part of the issue of these incredible instances of gun violence and tragedies resulting from that."

Stanton said he is behind several changes to gun laws in the coming year.

"We are supportive of assault weapons regulations, reducing high capacity ammo magazines and eliminating gun show loopholes."

Stanton also supports placing more police officers in schools as resource officers, not armed guards, and feels that addressing mental health care in America will help reduce mass shootings.

    Look at Austrailia and others.
It is interesting that in places such as Australia where owning a firearm has become illegal, that the crime and homicide rates have suddenly jumped up rather than gone down. The fact is that criminals will always have guns, and often powerful ones at that. The best deterrent against them is the knowledge that their potential victims might be armed, making them think twice about committing a crime in the first place. Also, why is this even up for discussion? We have a RIGHT to bear arms.

You're right Mayor...WE NEED MORE LAWS!
Perhaps we should adopt Chicago's gun control measures of some of your Democrat cronies, if so, this is what we can look forward to: Body count: In the last six months 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago. 221 killed in Iraq AND Chicago has one of the strictest gun laws in the entire US. The leadership in Illinois - all Democrats. Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago . Chicago school system rated one of the worst in the country. State pension fund $78 Billion in debt, worst in country. Cook County ( Chicago ) sales tax 10.25% highest in country. Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!

Gun nuts rarely get their facts right.
About Australia: "Overall, the number of...homicides has been in decline since 1996. In 1996, there were 354 homicides in Australia compared with 260 in 2010. This is a decrease of 27%. The number of victims of robbery in 2010 is the lowest on record since 1996...Robbery victim numbers peaked in 2001...Sexual assault victim numbers have been decreasing since 2008, by approximately 4% per year. Over the seven year period 2003 to 2010, the number of victims across all violent crimes has fluctuated, with no consistent pattern of increase or decrease being evident."

    The last thing "we" need
is another stupid politician claiming to represent "us", but only catering to the lowest common denominator among us. "There is innocent ignorance and there is invincible, dogmatic, and self-righteous ignorance. Every tragic mass shooting seems to bring out examples of both among gun-control advocates." ~ Thomas Sowell

Do guns make us safer? Hardly.
"Although firearms are often kept in homes for personal protection, this study shows that the practice is counterproductive. Our data indicate that keeping a gun in the home is independently associated with an increase in the risk of homicide in the home. The use of illicit drugs and a history of physical fights in the home are also important risk factors. Efforts to increase home security have largely focused on preventing unwanted entry, but the greatest threat to the lives of household members appears to come from within."

    Gun Control
We don't need more gun control. Guns aren't the problem people are, quit blaming things that can't defend themselves.

    That's a very nice...
sentiment and opinion Michoacan, but I believe you are forgeting one very important thing, namely the 2nd ammendment. That is a fact, and that supersedes all other laws. To tell somebody they can't own a gun flys in the face of the Constitution. Period.

From the sources I have found regarding Austrailia tell a much different story than you are saying. "•In 2006, assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent. •Sexual assault -- Australia's equivalent term for rape -- increased 29.9 percent. •Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent." This according to the Australia's Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.
