listen Listen: Tom Horne, Arizona Attorney General
Tom Horne joined the show to discuss his proposal for security in Arizona schools that includes at least one armed employee in a school at any time.

When it comes to protecting Arizona schools, Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne said, while he would prefer armed police officers in every school, the idea is not financially viable and arming faculty is a good second option.

"It's unlikely the legislature is going to be able to afford to pay for a policeman in every school," he told News/Talk 92.3 KTAR's Karie & Chuck on Thursday. "This is the second best proposal."

Horne's proposal would see one volunteer faculty member, likely the principal, at each school trained in handling a firearm and emergency situation response. Once they complete the course, that faculty member would be permitted to keep a firearm in a secure location on school property. Their name would not be released.

"I see my proposal as a golden mean between two extremes," said Horne. "One extreme, as people have proposed, would let any teacher who wants to to bring guns to school. I think that would create more danger than it would solve."

Horne said the other extreme is not doing anything and possibly allowing another incident similar to that in Newtown, Conn. to occur.

Overall, Horne said he has received many messages of support, including some from county sheriffs, but some teachers' unions said they feel multiple guns on campus will create more potential violence. Horne said he shares that fear.

"If you have a lot of guns around the school, kids will get at them," he said. "It could cause a lot of trouble. When teachers confiscate cell phones, sometimes kids can break the locks and get at their cell phones. It wouldn't be safe to have a lot of people bringing guns."

    Gun nuts like the idea.

    Rational thought
attacks typically happen in a matter of minutes, and said gun-toting teachers could, at the very least, buy time for kids to escape while police race to the scene.

    good deterrent
shooters like gun free zones because they have total control, they know there will be no resistence, they can do what they want on their terms. however just knowing a zone like a school might have armed faculty takes control away from the shooter and may act as a deterrent.

Gun cabinet next to the crayola shelf.
Looks like the beginning of a trend. Let the universal arming begin. We need this where ever tiny tots congregate. Kiddie pool lifeguards need to be packing heat in their speedos. Ronald McDonald and mayor McCheese are naturals for Bushmasters. School bus drivers are obvious candidates for rapid fire semis. And how can we overlook every daycare center in America? But how to pay? We know that the same people who love guns also hate government spending for any purpose and will vote against budget restriction overrides to pay for these changes. What a dilemma this gun love is causing us.

We can't skimp on fuding for "safety"
isn't that what the legislatures tell us everytime we have a tax increase? So in the typical legislative prose REAL safety is overlooked while percieved is maintained. Get the motor cops off the street. They have no "safety" purpose, they're strickly for revenue. Wasn't the 2% increase for additional cops? Just saying.

    Don't you just love
All these celebrities and politicians who send their children to private schools that have armed security, who many employ armed security guards protecting their massive estates, and many who enjoy the protection of armed body guards and secret service, telling the rest of us that guns are bad and we shouldn't be allowed to own them. Perhaps we should get rid of the armed ASU campus police because more guns will just mean more violence. If all the adults at ASU can benefit from armed campus police, why is it so absurd to give all the "tiny tots" the same level of security at the K-12.
