Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said changes are needed to ensure the safety of children and all citizens.

"Now, is the right time to act," he said.

Stanton is one of four Arizona mayors that are members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which, according to the organization's website, is a coalition of about 700 mayors "committed to working with our fellow mayors to share best practices, develop innovative policies, and support legislation at the national, state, and local levels that will help law enforcement target illegal guns."

Stanton is also part of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which sent an open letter to the president and Congress asking for more restrictive gun laws.

"We're asking for smart public policy, public policy that we know will reduce gun violence, hopefully reduce the number of deaths as a result of gun violence and we think it's the right direction for our country," said Stanton.

Some of the changes Stanton would like to see happen include stopping the sale of high capacity magazines, assault weapons and closing gun show loopholes.

    Stanton should be impeached
on the basis of his professed profound ignorance. "Assault weapons" have been severely restricted and largely unavailable to most people since 1986. Stop mimicking the ignorant rants of the MSM and learn something before you open your mouth, please. Violent crime has gone DOWN in this city since restrictions on concealed carry and semi-autos have been relaxed. Idiot.

Gun control is meant to intentionally
put us on unequal ground. Tell the cops, SS and every other "good guy" group out there to turn over their weapons and we'll turn over ours. Because then we will be equal and there is no need for them to shoot some one because the "someones" wont be armed. No one can harm another with a firearm because no one good, bad or ugly will have them. You cant have it lop sided with only one group armed, nothing will stand in their way and everything will fall.

    What a idiot,
He becomes a mayor in a state with the most relaxed gun laws in the country and wants to push gun control. Goodbye what ever your name is.

Gun Control Defined: The theory that people who are willing to ignore laws against rape, kidnapping, theft, and murder will obey a law that prohibits them from possessing a firearm. Assault Weapon Definition: An assault weapon is anything used as a weapon to assault someone with. Pencil, boiling water, frying pan, etc. Assault is a behavior, not a device.
Politically incorrect and proud of it.

The conservative Supreme Court agrees with
Stanton that the right to bear arms does not exist without restriction. "WASHINGTON -- Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said Sunday that there are "undoubtedly" limits to a person's right to bear arms under the Second Amendment, but that future court cases will have to decide where to draw the line. "We'll see," Scalia said, suggesting that future court cases will determine what limitations on modern-day weapons are permissible. "Some undoubtedly are [permissible] because there were some that were acknowledged at the time" the Constitution was written, Scalia said."
