TUCSON, Ariz. -- The husband of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords says the response to the deadly shooting at a Connecticut elementary school must consist of more than regret, sorrow and condolence.

Mark Kelly said in a post on his Facebook page Friday that the children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School and all victims of gun violence deserve leaders who are courageous enough to have a ``meaningful discussion'' about the nation's gun laws.

Kelly says the families of the victims and the entire Connecticut community are in his and Giffords' thoughts and prayers.

Giffords was nearly killed in a January 2011 shooting that killed six people and wounded 13 at a meet-and-greet event outside a Tucson, Ariz., grocery store. She was left partially blind with a paralyzed right arm and a brain injury.

    Wait...
First, this guy is using his wife's unfortunate, tragic, shooting as a bully pulpit to get ready for his own political aspirations. Shame on him. Second, Why don't liberals want to ban cars for drunk driving? Or alcohol/drugs for 85% of domestic violence? They aren't scared of them. But they are scared of guns and use the fear to demand a ban. The real discussion should be about the lack of moral compass and discipline over the last 40 years. Also the P.C. handling of the mentally ill. Gotta ignore it or we might not be all inclusive and tolerant..... We reap what we sow.

    I love it
when all these people spout off about gun control when they walk around with security guards WITH GUNS! Mayor of NY doesn't pee without security, but like all bullies, what is good for me is not good for you.

    Here we go again-
blame the guns instead of the reasons for this miscreant's actions. Look at this youngster's upbringing: pretty obvious he had a problem with his mother at least. Guess it's more important&easier to blame the availability of guns than to find out&ACCENT what MADE the perpetrator do what he did
