TUCSON, Ariz. -- A brief chase in Tucson's midtown area ended with the killing of a police dog and a suspected carjacker.
Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Widmer says the incident began at about 11 p.m. Wednesday when a person called police and said a man took his car at gunpoint.
An officer spotted the car and tried to get the driver to stop but he sped away. The driver ran red lights, drove into oncoming traffic and then plowed through a front yard before stopping in an alley.
He ran and officers chased.
He eventually emerged from a front porch and pointed a gun to his head. That's when the police dog Ivan was released and bit the man's left arm.
The man shot the dog and refused commands to drop the weapon. Officers Chris Fenoglio, Matthew Merz, Jason Kerns and Jon Collamore all fired, hitting the man numerous times.
