TUCSON, Ariz. -- A 46-year-old Tucson man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for killing his wife's puppy during an argument with her about his drinking.

A judge on Wednesday also ordered Kevin Michael Davis to serve three years' intensive probation after he is released.

Davis pleaded guilty to cruelty to animals resulting in serious physical injury and aggravated domestic violence. Under terms of a plea agreement he could have received nearly five years in prison.

The Arizona Daily Star reported Davis and his wife were arguing about whether he should stop drinking when he took her puppy by its hind legs and slammed its head into concrete, killing it.

Pima County Superior Court Judge Paul Tang called Davis's actions "beyond disturbing and deplorable." He has an extensive criminal history.
