The Deer Valley Unified School District may make a big change at one of its schools next year.

The district said it needs a day school that would house between 88 and 105 special needs students.

"Students with disabilities, which are now currently placed in private schools for intensive educational settings of behavior and academics, could all be placed in one central area," said district spokeswoman Heidi Vega.

To do that, the district is considering turning one of its five elementary schools into a day school. Those five schools that may be altered are Bellair, Desert Winds, Greenbrier, Mountain Shadows and Sunrise elementary schools. All of those schools have enrollments of less than 500 students.

If the district follows through with the plan, students at one of those five schools would be transferred to other schools, and the campus would then be transformed into the day school.

Vega said the district is trying to do all of this while living within its' means.

"We're receiving more and more budget cuts from the state," she said. "Our enrollment continues to decline, unfortunately, and we have to find a way to be fiscally responsible as a district."

Vega said that three out of every five homes in the Deer Valley Unified School District do not have an elementary school-aged child living there.

The district board will take up the proposal at a meeting on Jan. 8.

    IF ALL OF THOSE
schools have less than 500 students then as a taxpayer of the district, whey don't we close a couple more? When my children were in school in this district, we had double sessions and for a while at Sunrise there were triple sessions. K-3 morning and afternoon sessions then grades 4-6 from 9-3. Now there is a school on every corner. Also I don't see anything about reducing some of the Administrative salary and costs at the district level, that is if we are really trying to live within our means, lol.

the way, if you ever want a bond issue to pass again in this district, you might want to run a report and see just how many of your employees "actually" live in the district. Easy to moan and groan about budget cuts when you don't get to vote for board members and bond issues. Maybe if the majority of your employees had a vested interest in the district, things would get better.

The schools listed were probably built when the area was seeing a constant increase in population and home building. That all came to a sudden hault when the market dropped out. Now the economy is on the upswing, wouldn't make alot of sense to start closing schools only to have to re-open or rebuild in a few years. I don't think the valley population is going to go down in the next few years, not with droves coming in from California and south of the border.
