Woman declared fit for trial in husband's death

TUCSON -- Lawyers for a woman accused in the car-bombing death of her ex-husband in Tucson nearly 16 years ago believe their client remains mentally unfit even though she had been ruled psychologically competent to stand trial.

The Arizona Daily Star reports (http://bit.ly/VcAdz2) that Pima County Superior Court Judge Richard Fields ruled 55-year-old Pamela Phillips was competent to stand trial.

Phillips was indicted on charges that she orchestrated the Nov. 1, 1996, death of Gary Triano.

Triano died in a pipe-bomb explosion outside a country club.

The man accused of building and detonating the bomb, Ronald Young, is serving two life sentences.

Phillips was declared incompetent to stand trial last December and was ordered to participate in a jail restoration-to-competency program.

Her trial is scheduled to begin April 23.
