Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton speaks about a coalition of Valley mayors that will seek to create an education plan for Arizona. (Jill Ryan/KTAR)

PHOENIX -- Valley mayors are on a mission to improve Arizona schools.

The mayors are joining local business leaders to create a plan to improve education across Arizona.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said educators are at a crossroads since Proposition 204 failed.

"We know that there have been new responsibilities on our schools, tough new standards and, as mayors, we embrace the challenges and, as mayors, we just want to make sure our schools have the resources to get the job done," he said.

Prop 204 would have extended school revenue, but Mesa Mayor Scott Smith said it's time to move on.

"We can't deal with yesterday's news," he said. "We have to deal with tomorrow's realities and tomorrow's reality is that we have to measure up to educational standards in the 21st century."

    "extended school revenue"
means "tax," we are not stupid citizens Scott. And perhaps getting a budget under control so you don't have to raise taxes would help. It can be done, just like all us citizens that have to live on a budget. Welcome to where citizens are getting smarter about your wasteful spending over the years. Time to put on your big boy pants and start doing your job more efficiently.

    How About School Budget?
Money keeps slipping through the cracks at schools and it is high time to review those cracks and repair them. So much waste and taxpayers once again expected to bail out the mess that others create. Let's get some real accounting minded people involved on school boards instead of former teachers, principals and lawyers.

You nailed it on the head buddy. I keep asking myself when will these hikes stop, and force the government/schools to discover what does not work, and what does work for educating our kids. Then remove what does not work.

    Misleading article
Prop 204 didn't guarantee funding for schools! Schools were amongst some of the government entities that COULD receive funding, but it didn't guarantee that they would receive funding. Nowhere in the law did it guarantee a specific amount or percentage would go to schools or to boost teacher pay. Prop 100 when passed was supposed to be a temporary bridge between down tax revenue and continuing to provide the same level of funding for the schools during the "great recession." Since then tax revenue has increased and there is no longer a need to bridge this gap.
