Court denies Arpaio's bid to reconsider ruling

PHOENIX -- A court has rejected Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's request to reconsider its ruling that criticized jail officers' decision to force pink underwear onto a mentally ill inmate who erroneously believed jailers were trying to rape him.
A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday denied Arpaio's request to have a larger panel of justices reconsider the court's March decision.
A jury verdict in favor of Arpaio's office was thrown out and a new trial was ordered in a lawsuit by inmate Eric Vogel's estate.
The estate's attorney has said the officers didn't sexually assault Vogel when he was brought to jail in 2001 for assaulting an officer, but Vogel thought he was being raped.
County spokeswoman Cari Gerchick says the case appears headed to trial.
