PHOENIX -- Police say an 18-year-old suspected car thief is in custody after leading officers on a pursuit that spanned much of the Phoenix area.

Police say Christian Barron is being booked on charges of vehicle theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful flight and an outstanding warrant.

Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos says Barron's female passenger was not booked.

The pursuit started Thursday when police began following a minivan that had been reported stolen. The driver refused to stop. He drove all over the city, passing through residential neighborhoods and industrial areas.

Police backed off and kept tabs on the van with a helicopter.

The pursuit finally ended near 1st Avenue and Tonto when the van stopped and Barron got out and laid on the ground.
