TUCSON, Ariz. -- The governing board at the largest school district in Tucson has adopted guidelines that will direct administrators on how to choose as many as 10 schools to close as a cost-cutting measure.

KVOA-TV reported Tuesday's decision by the Tucson Unified School District board came as parents attended the meeting dressed in their kids' school colors. They wanted to let board members know they didn't want their neighborhood schools closed.

The guidelines administrators are to use to pick the schools to close include anticipated cost savings and academic success.

The board wants to decide the closures by late December. The district faces a projected $17 million budget deficit next year.
