PHOENIX -- Voters in Colorado and Washington have approved the use of recreational marijuana, but the director of an Arizona anti-drug group said it would be a mistake to invoke a similar law.

The age-old argument for legalizing marijuana has been that, since people will continue to smoke pot, the state might as well tax it and make money off of it. Shelly Mowery with Drug Free AZ said that is shortsighted thinking.

"When you look at the impacts that marijuana use causes, the tax would pale in comparison to the health care costs and costs of auto crashes connected with impaired driving," she said.

Mowery is unaware of any efforts under way at this time to push to legalize recreational marijuana use in Arizona.

Mowery is not sure if the voter-approved use of marijuana in Colorado and Washington state will hold up in court. Federal law prohibits the use of marijuana and federal laws override those created by state and local governments.

    Stupid Reefer Madness BS!
Anti-drug groups stand to lose millions of dollars in funding WHEN cannabis becomes legal, OF COURSE they would be against the legalization! Cannabis has not been responsible for ONE DEATH in THOUSANDS of years... ASPIRIN kills 100 people a year... The ONLY things that makes cannabis use "dangerous" ARE THE LAWS AGAINST IT! No victim, no crime.

You & I Know There Are Parents Without A Brain
The thing is we have grown - ups not acting like grown - ups. When a grandmother and a mother think its ok and cute to take pictures of a grandchild smoking their pot at age one which was on the news last night you surely should stop and think... You just realize their are many of people that have no brains or think it is their right to do what ever they want to another human being. Tell me if this child had a choice into learning and developing into a well human being.

There is no documented case of Marijuana overdose or Marijuana poisening.. People already drive next to you on to much caffeine, RX meds, Not enough sleep, emotional, and other substances. There is just no proof that this will increase.. If you are a RX Pain killer and mull someone over in your car, guess what, they are probably going to give you a blood test and find that you had that in your system. They dont have any other way to tell that,, it would be no different with Marijuana.. Its a double standard.

Anti-drug groups, like Drug Free AZ, stand to lose MILLIONS of dollars in funding when cannabis is legalized. OF COURSE they are going to be against legalizing cannabis! Cannabis has not caused a single death in thousands of years... Acetominophen kills approximately 100 people a year... The only reason using cannabis is "dangerous" is BECAUSE OF THE LAWS AGAINST IT! No victim, no crime! FREE THE LEAF!!

Dirt is taxed, Property tax can be a "dirt" tax when applied to open lots. If I go purchase 10 tons of quarter minus, I pay sales tax on it. Etc..

    Obviously an anti drug group...
Would think legalization is a bad idea. I would like to see proof of increased health care costs that they claim will happen if it was. I really wonder how many hospital visits were solely due to smoking marijuana without any other complications. I'm sure there would be some who end up driving while smoking like idiots, but they most likely do that right now anyways and I'm sure if you compare the number of marijuana related accidents to those of alcohol, it would most likely be marginal at best.

Better Too Much Freedom Than Too Little
HOWEVER - in a society that mandates seat belt use, insurance, elementary education, and other basic areas of everyday life, why are we discussing legalizing drugs? Anyone who uses any substance for the purpose of a "high" is giving up a portion of their freedom. I am against enslavement through either force or personal choice.

I assume that you never drink alcohol? Never smoke cigarettes? Never drink coffee? Oh yeah - those are ALL DRUGS. Even sugar is a drug in a way.
