PHOENIX -- Count Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer as among those who thinks the electoral college is outdated and that the United States should instead pick its president by the nationwide popular vote's winner.

Brewer says it's disappointing that a small number of battleground states effectively decide the presidential race's outcome.

President Barack Obama won the popular vote narrowly Tuesday while winning the electoral vote comfortably, thanks to decisive wins over Mitt Romney in most battleground states.

Brewer says switching to electing presidents by the popular vote would give all voters a sense that their votes count and mean that more states get attention during the presidential campaign.

Brewer spoke with reporters after a public appearance Friday. She was noncommittal when asked whether she'd push for a change in the nation's election system.

I am sure that Governor Brew Ha-Ha would not be saying any of this if Romney would have won. She obviously does not understand how the Electoral College is intended to work. It is intended to level out the playing field between large populated states, such as California, with less populated states, such as North Dakota. Go back to school Jan.

The Electoral College levels out the playing field? No, states like North Dakota already get ignored. States like California get blown off by Republicans because they know they can't win it. People in states that typically go for one party do feel it is a waste of time. Electing on over all votes would get everyone involved. We would see the candidates go to more just Ohio and Florida because voters there that would be inspired to vote pushing their overall total up. Election night ALL the votes would need to be counted before a winner could be called.

    Easy to say
Easy to support the electoral college when your man won but it is antiquated. One man/woman one vote. Let the people really decide.

    The Only Time........
I ever have agreed with Jan (embarrassment) Brewer - I'm quite sure if this question were on the ballot nationwide the great majority would vote to get rid of it. The last time it was tried was under the Nixon administration (read about it on Google) Most people don't understand it - seems fair that like other countries the candidate with the most votes should win. In 2000 Gore won by over 550,000 votes, but the Supreme Court stepped in and gave it to W - that's my whine!

you just won't stop. This is your problem. Must be nice to change laws when they don't suit you. What are you going to do when your guy doesn't win the popular vote like this time, go back the other way?

It should be set up that the winner of any state gets the two senate votes and the states remaining votes would be proportionally divided. Two states already hold this form. Maine and Nebraska each have a variation of “proportional representation.†Makes sense, but isn't that an oxymoron when applied to politics?
