The comic in question is shown. (change.org)

After the "Arizona Daily Wildcat: published an offensive comic strip on Oct. 18 that condoned violence and homophobia, a petition was made for the editor-in-chief, cartoonist and copy editor to be fired.

The petition on Change.org has over 8,000 supporters. The letter of the petition states

"Condoning violence and homophobia by allowing this cartoon to run is reprehensible and cannot be tolerated as acceptable with the offering of a simple apology or explanation."

The cartoon depicts a father telling his son that he will use violence if he ever comes out gay.

The Arizona Daily Wildcat's editor Kristina Bui wrote an apology article that said the cartoonist of the publication was fired. They are reviewing their editorial practices.

    Offensive and wrong...however.
After having read this short comic I find it highly offensive for anybody to joke about killing somebody because they are homosexual. We are all human beings, and should treat each other as such. However, I find it equally offensive when people who speak out against homosexuality are then labeled as hateful, bigots, etc. I don't support homosexuality, and believe it is wrong. But even though I believe homosexuality is wrong and immoral, it does not mean I hate homosexuals, nor should anybody be violent to another because of their beliefs or lifestyles.

Very much in poor taste, but
what's really interesting is that there are probably thousands of Fathers in this country that have had the same talk with their son, or at least had the same thoughts. Guess they all need to be fired as Fathers as well. Freedom of speech is a thing of the past, thankfully no one can take away your freedom of thought...yet.

The dad in this cartoon, and those who think
like him, have a very similar mindset to those parents who think that "honor killing" is an acceptable response to the differently oriented.

    Well put Micho
because "honor killing" happens all the time in the US. Dude you crack me up! Like everyone that has said, "I could just kill you" or "I'll kill you if you do that again" really means it. Dude, you're killin' me! LOL I guess gay people are incapable of making fun of straight people. Wonder what it would be like if the cartoon depicted a gay parent telling their child they would kill them if they grew up straight.

Assuming the dad in the cartoon is kidding, yret.
Hate crimes against gays resulting in serious injury and death can trace their origin to hateful attitudes inculcated at an early age.
