Young team working to get out Latino vote
PHOENIX -- Members of Team Awesome are confident they'll make change happen this election.
According to one of the organizers, Team Awesome is a group of enthusiastic students from Grand Canyon University with a "burning motivation to make sure Latino voices are heard."
Aldo Gonzalez, a team member, said last year they knocked on 70,000 doors, which increased voter turnout by 500 percent. He said the high Latino turnout was critical in helping firefighter Daniel Valenzuela get elected to Phoenix City Council.
"A lot of people, no one has ever gone to their door and said, 'Hey, you know, if you vote it's important,' " said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said the team is focusing on the race for sheriff between incumbent Joe Arpaio and challenger Paul Penzone and the U.S. Senate race between Democrat Richard Carmona and Republican Jeff Flake.
