TUCSON, Ariz. -- A Texas man sentenced to die for killing an Arizona couple in 2009 also has been given a 42-year prison term.

The Arizona Daily Star says a Pima County Superior Court judge on Monday sentenced Michael Carlson to two consecutive 21-year terms for kidnapping the victims.

The 56-year-old Carlson was convicted of first-degree murder and kidnapping in August and sentenced to death last month.

Carlson was arrested in June 2009 on an outstanding Texas parole violation warrant two weeks after 49-year-old Kenneth Alliman and 52-year-old Rebecca Lofton were reported missing.

Carlson was indicted in the case after he told a television reporter he had killed the couple and burned their bodies in trash pits. Carlson had been living with the couple rent-free on five acres of land near Tucson.
