PHOENIX (AP)- A man already in custody on aggravated assault charges now is accused in a fatal Phoenix shooting three months ago.

Phoenix police said Friday that 20-year-old Terrell Denton is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Authorities say 18-year-old Dewight Westbrook was walking with some female friends to a fast-food restaurant July 9 when a man approached from behind and shot him several times. Westbrook died from his wounds.

Homicide investigators say Denton allegedly was trying to become a gang member. They believe Westbrook was targeted because he lived in a different neighborhood than Denton.

Police didn't immediately know Friday whether Denton had a lawyer yet.
