FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- A Flagstaff police officer who used his baton, boot and a cable to kill an injured dog after a fellow officer accidentally hit the animal with his car has resigned.

The Arizona Daily Sun reported that Cpl. John Tewes delivered his resignation letter Friday.

Tewes was called Aug. 19 after another officer hit a dog on the loose with his police car.

Both officers decided the dog needed to be euthanized, but Tewes was concerned about using his gun in the neighborhood.

Authorities said the animal didn't die after Tewes bludgeoned it and jumped on its skull.

Finally, he used a hobble, which is like a metal cable, to strangle the dog.

Tewes told investigators he regularly clubbed animals to end their suffering while he was hunting.

to those who elevate animals to the same level as Man. The result is when animals are given equal standing as a human, you end up lowering humans, not raising up animals.. Here s a trained, good employee who gave up his job due to the harassment from animal lovers. What a shame. BTW I'm a proud member of PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals)!

I guess the officer should of scooped the dog up, and rushed lights and sirens to the vet hospital, and then had the vet do what ever he could. Perhaps running up a very large bill for the city to pay with tax payer money. Forget the fact the dog was running around loose. This sounds more of a training issue probablem. Really? Being forced to resign over a hit dog. Did the other officer get in trouble for hitting the dog? There has to be more to this story, or else the management in the police department is not very good...just saying..

    VICTIM?
If the HUMAN decided an ANIMAL needed to be euthanized, Animal Management in Flagstaff should've been contacted. They could've HUMANely ended the poor thing's life. Transporting the dog, no matter what the distance, would've been less suffering than allowing them to attempt to bludgeon the dog to death, then stomp on the dog's head..FAIL! The dog finally met his match with the hobble. What a victory for them! What kind of HUMAN would or could do that? I'll gladly raise my dog up to the same level as anyone who treat's an animal this way, GLADLY!
