Tucson man gets prison in deadly street race crash
TUCSON, Ariz. -- A Tucson man has been sentenced to more than 18 years in prison in connection with a deadly street race.
Pima County prosecutors say 22-year-old Damaso Alavez will have to serve every day of a 16-year prison term for second-degree murder and 85 percent of the remaining time for endangerment.
The Arizona Daily Star says Alavez was convicted of second-degree murder, endangerment and criminal damage during a September trial. He was also convicted of three misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Authorities say Alavez was street racing with another driver when his car ran a red light and crashed into the vehicle being driven by 29-year-old Stephen Larson about 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 15, 2011.
Larson later died at a Tucson hospital.
