PHOENIX - Phoenix police say a man who had just kidnapped his estranged female partner opened fire on an officer but only hit a patrol car.

Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos says 35-year-old Angel Padilla dragged his estranged partner from her home and drove away with her early Saturday. A patrol officer saw Padilla's vehicle run a stop sign and tried to get it to stop not knowing a kidnapping was under way.

Sgt. Steve Martos with Phoenix police said at exactly the same time the officer made the traffic stop, 911 calls came in to the dispatch about the kidnapping.

"He was unaware of the kidnapping or who else was in the vehicle, but when that suspect fired upon that officer the female victim was still in the vehicle with him," Martos said.

Martos says Padilla stopped, got out with an assault-style rifle and fired repeatedly at the patrol car. The officer took cover and wasn't seriously hurt but the windshield, door, hood and tires of the car were hit.

Padilla later released the woman but police have not been able to locate him.

Police said Padilla was involved in at least four home invasions, including one that left a victim in critical condition, before he allegedly fired at the cruiser.

Silent Witness is offering a reward up to $5,000 for information leading to Padilla's location and arrest.

    Many KTAR commentators are less
concerned about the crime committed than they are about the ethnicity of the alleged criminal. Many murders, rapes and assaults are reported on KTAR, but they go unremarked upon unless the alleged perpetrator is Hispanic. How's about that? Not passing judgment on that practice, merely noting its demonstrable existence.

Micho is nowhere to be found on the comment board if the perp is identified as an undocumented vegetable picker that has just committed a murder, rape, incest or whatever. Why can't you just agree that we have enough of our own criminals to deal with. The border needs to be closed to stop the invasion.

    Nonsense, BURP. I rarely comment
on crimes themselves, no matter the race or ethnicity if the perp. I see that as an unproductive enterprise, practiced often by those who like to think of themselves as tough guys. I do look for the social trends revealed by the comments of others which reveals their mistaken belief systems. I note that you ignore the gist of my previous comment because you recognize it's essential truth. I am heartened by this.

Punish yes, but don't jump to conclusions. (1)
First I want it known that I completely agree that the punsihment for this individual should be sever considering the nature of his crimes. However, I am disapointed to read many posts where people are jumping to the conclusion that this man is an illegal immigrant when no statement has been made to confirm such. Also, let us remember that we live in a nation based on laws, including laws we may not like, but are nevertheless obligated to keep, which include a right for everybody to a fair trial.

It may turn out that this individual will be identified as illegal immigrant, and will need to be punished accordingly. Yet again it dissapoints me that so many people seem to want to execute justice with a bullet, forgeting that we are all born with certain unailanble rights. We are all human beings, all protected by laws that many have fought and even died for. Let us not forget who we are as Americans, and not sink to the level of tyrants. We have many imperfections, but considering all factors, this truly is the greatest nation in the world with the most guarantees for civil liberties.

Again, my concern is that you seem to have no concern about how our once proud country is being turned into a third world country right before our eyes. Having lived in the "South Mountain Village" area for about the last 30 years I feel my observations are warranted. My comment as you eluded to only makes the observation that you indeed don't comment on the increasing amount of crimes being perpetrated by what appears to be "illegals".

Your lack of concern over the deterioration of my lifestyle seems unfair at best.because your only concern appears to pertain to the plight of the undocumented vegetable picker. I agree that in a lot of posts the usual suspects must get tired jumping to conclusions. But in their defense the media is so afraid of being PC that they just don't give us any usable information. Have a nice day.

But I did respond appropriately to your
comment BURP. Your last statement makes my very point. You said, "by what appear to be 'illegals.'" The only thing you have to go on is an Hispanic surname. Like most commentators, you conflate being Hispanic with being illegal. When the mechanisms of government do the same thing through things like 1070, then all Hispanics are suspect. Not a good state of affairs.

BTW, BURP, I've lived in South Phoenix
about the same amount of time that you have. I moved here those decades ago from central Phoenix because of the small town feel of the place, the mountains, open spaces, flower and orange groves. Central Avenue was still an uncurbed two lanes near the mountains. All in all, an unalloyed delight. My lifestyle has deteriorated because of the massive population explosion and its attendant urban congestion that has filled in all of those amenities I once enjoyed. These new folks were not the illegal immigrants that you rail against.
