A Wednesday traffic stop turned into the arrests of 14 people on human smuggling charges, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said in a release.

Deputies attempted to perform a traffic stop in north Phoenix when the suspect vehicle attempted to flee. The vehicle was quickly halted and 14 subjects were found inside, two of of which were armed with semi-automatic handguns.

During the investigation, deputies learned that 11 of the subjects paid between $2,800 and $3,000 each to be smuggled to various spots in the United States.

Three U.S. citizens were found in the vehicle as well, two of which who were armed and had a criminal history.

All the suspects were booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on human smuggling charges.
