GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. -- A Maryland woman has been killed in a traffic accident on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona.

National Park Service officials say 57-year old Carol Cook of Woodbine was driving an SUV when she went off the road and hit a tree. She was dead at the scene just outside the Park's entrance station.

A male relative riding in the SUV was taken to a hospital in southern Utah for treatment of minor injuries after Tuesday's accident. Park Service spokeswoman Shannan Marcak said Thursday the agency was not identifying the injured person identity to protect his privacy.

Both people in the vehicle were wearing seat belts.

The Park Service and the Arizona highway patrol are investigating the cause of the accident.
